Big game across both Delta and Moremi

Still waters, then the wild

Begin on a remote island in the permanent Okavango Delta, where days unfold to the dip of a mokoro paddle and the call of a fish eagle. Then fly east into Moremi Game Reserve — one of Africa’s finest wildlife areas — for game drives through predator-rich savannah and boat excursions on the Xakanaxa Lagoon. Two camps, two contrasting rhythms, connected by a scenic bush flight and wrapped into just five days. With all meals, drinks, activities and flights included, the Delta Essentials Fly-In delivers more of Botswana’s character per day than any other itinerary we know.

Day 1: Arrive in the Okavango Delta

Aerial view of Camp Okavango thatched buildings on Nxaragha Island

From the air, the Okavango reveals itself slowly — a lattice of dark channels cutting through bright floodplain, palm-topped islands adrift in a sea of papyrus. Your light aircraft from Maun lands on a bush airstrip, and a short transfer brings you to Camp Okavango: a solar-powered water camp on a private island in the permanent Delta. There are no roads here and no engine noise — just water, birdcall and the creak of wooden walkways connecting your raised tented suite to the camp’s two lounges, library and rim-flow pool. In the late afternoon, head out on a motorboat safari through the maze of papyrus-lined channels. Return to camp for a candlelit dinner on the open-air terrace as the Delta’s chorus of frogs and nightjars builds around you.

Day 2: Okavango Delta — Mokoro, Islands and Waterways

Motorboat with guests among papyrus on an Okavango Delta channel

A full day to absorb the unhurried rhythms of the permanent Delta. In the morning, step into a traditional mokoro — a dugout canoe steered silently by an expert poler — and glide through crystal-clear channels fringed with papyrus and water lilies. Eye-level with the water, you’ll notice details that a vehicle safari can never offer: the iridescent flash of a malachite kingfisher, the splash of a red lechwe in the shallows, the rustle of a reed frog in the papyrus. Later, join a guided bush walk on one of the neighbouring islands, where larger wildlife — elephant, giraffe, lechwe and occasionally lion — can be tracked on foot with experienced guides. The birding here is outstanding year-round: wattled cranes, African jacanas, pied kingfishers and, with patience, the elusive Pel’s fishing owl. As evening falls, gather around the camp’s fire pit beneath a vast Delta sky.

Day 3: Fly to Moremi Game Reserve

Camp Moremi thatched suite with canopy bed and bush view

The landscape transforms beneath your light aircraft: braided waterways and floating islands thin out as the Delta gives way to open grassland, mopane woodland and dry savannah. A morning mokoro or motorboat excursion and brunch at Camp Okavango round off your time on the water before you fly east into Moremi Game Reserve. Land at the Xakanaxa airstrip and transfer to Camp Moremi, tucked beneath a canopy of ancient ebony and jackalberry trees on the banks of the Xakanaxa Lagoon. The mood shifts instantly — this is big-game country, and the first sounds you’ll hear are hippo grunts and the distant call of a fish eagle. Settle into your tented suite with its sliding glass doors overlooking the bush, then head out on an afternoon game drive. Moremi’s mix of habitats supports exceptional predator density: lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog and hyena all patrol these plains.

Day 4: Moremi — Game Drives and Lagoon

Safari vehicle watching lions in tall grass in Moremi Game Reserve

A full day to explore the remarkable diversity of Moremi. Head out at dawn with your guide for a game drive through the reserve’s mosaic of mopane woodland, open grassland and floodplain edge. Elephant herds, lion prides, giraffe and large numbers of antelope — impala, kudu, waterbuck and the distinctive red lechwe — are all regular sightings. The experienced guides at Camp Moremi know exactly where to look, and wild dog encounters are a genuine possibility in this part of the reserve. After brunch back at camp, spend the warmest hours at the pool overlooking the lagoon or on the elevated viewing platform — the deep grunts of hippo carry clearly across the still water, and herons pick their way along the far shore. In the late afternoon, head out on a motorboat excursion along the Xakanaxa Lagoon and its winding channels — a completely different perspective on Moremi’s wildlife, with superb birdlife and the chance of close encounters with hippo and elephant at the water’s edge. Return for your final bush dinner beneath the stars.

Day 5: Departure via Maun

Guests boarding a Cessna Caravan on a Botswana bush airstrip

One last sunrise over the Xakanaxa Lagoon — and if your flight schedule allows, a final early morning game drive through the reserve. After brunch at Camp Moremi, a light aircraft carries you back to Maun Airport for your onward connection. Connect with international flights via Johannesburg, or speak to us about extending your time in Botswana. However you continue, you’ll leave with the contrast of the Delta’s stillness and Moremi’s wild energy fresh in mind.

Scenic flights & expert guides

A fly-in safari means small aircraft connect your camps instead of long road transfers — you spend your time in the bush, not on the road. On this itinerary, a scheduled light aircraft flies you from Maun into the Delta and between camps, with luggage limited to 20 kg in a soft-sided bag. Every flight is low-altitude and scenic: expect bird’s-eye views of winding channels, palm-fringed islands and wildlife moving between them. At Camp Okavango, experienced guides lead mokoro excursions, motorboat safaris and guided island walks. At Camp Moremi, game drives in open 4×4 vehicles and motorboat excursions on the Xakanaxa Lagoon are led by professional resident guides.

Why book this itinerary?

Short on time, not on experience. At just four nights across two camps, this is the most compact fly-in safari on our books — but it covers remarkable ground. You’ll experience the Okavango Delta’s signature water wilderness and Moremi’s game-drive intensity in a single, seamless journey. It suits travellers who have five days to spare, couples on a first visit wanting a focused taster, or anyone who values quality over quantity. And because it starts and ends in Maun, it slots neatly into a longer Botswana journey if you decide to keep exploring.

Is this safari right for you?

  • Ideal if you have five days and want to experience both the Delta’s waterways and Moremi’s big game — without rushing
  • Ideal if this is a first visit and you want a focused introduction to what makes the Okavango and Moremi so special
  • Looking for a longer journey covering more of Botswana? Consider the Bush, Water & River Fly-In Safari (9 days, 3 camps)
  • Children aged six and older are welcome — younger children cannot be accommodated at these camps

Permanent water, reliable mokoro: Camp Okavango sits on Nxaragha Island in the permanent Delta, so mokoro and motorboat excursions run year-round — not just during peak flood. The flood pulse peaks between June and August, making those months the most spectacular, but every open month delivers a genuine water safari.
