Where the Kalahari fringe meets the Okavango

Four nights is not a lot of time — but this itinerary makes them count. Rather than staying within the Delta system, it pairs two fundamentally different corners of Botswana: the arid Makgadikgadi Pans, where zebra herds and their predators gather along the Boteti River, and the lush waterways of Moremi Game Reserve, where ancient riverine forest meets open lagoon. The result is a safari that covers more ground — visually, ecologically — than most itineraries twice its length.

Day 1: Maun to Makgadikgadi Pans

Leroo La Tau lodge chalet with zebra herd on the Boteti riverbed

The scrubland below your light aircraft gives way to dry riverbed and open grassland as you track south-east from Maun towards the Makgadikgadi Pans. A short transfer from the airstrip brings you to a lodge perched on cliffs ten metres above the Boteti River — the name translates as ‘lion’s paw’ in Setswana, and the elevated position delivers sweeping, east-facing views across the river to the national park beyond. After settling in over lunch, head out on an afternoon game drive into Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. In the dry months, zebra and wildebeest gather along the Boteti in large numbers, shadowed by lion, hyena and cheetah. Return to the lodge for dinner as the sun sets behind you and the first stars appear over the pans.

Day 2: Full Day at Makgadikgadi Pans

Wake early and watch the sunrise from your veranda — the lodge faces east, making it one of the finest sunrise spots in Botswana. After breakfast, cross the river to reach your game drive vehicle on the national park side. The morning drive follows the Boteti riverfront, where zebra, elephant, giraffe and wildebeest come to drink, trailed by predators. Your guide will work the mopane woodland and grassland tracks in search of lion, cheetah, and both brown and spotted hyena. Back at the lodge between drives, spend time in the hide built into the riverbank at water level — eye-to-eye with whatever comes to drink, from elephant to impala. The afternoon drive continues into the park as the light softens and the animals begin to move again. After dark, a shorter drive on the lodge’s private concession offers a chance to spot nocturnal species that the national park’s daytime-only rules don’t allow.

Day 3: Makgadikgadi to Moremi Game Reserve

Okavango Delta waterways viewed from a light aircraft window

The shift is immediate. Where Makgadikgadi was open and dry, the view from your aircraft window now fills with serpentine channels, palm-fringed islands and the unmistakable green of the Okavango Delta system. You land near the Moremi Game Reserve and transfer to a classic tented camp on the banks of the Khwai River, overlooking Xakanaxa Lagoon. This is one of Botswana’s oldest and most characterful safari camps — Meru-style canvas tents under towering trees, a self-service bar, and paraffin lamps that light the walkways after dark. Settle in, then head out on an afternoon game drive through mopane woodland and open savannah. The habitat here is richer and more layered than the pans — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and wild dog all frequent this area.

Day 4: Full Day in Moremi Game Reserve

Camp Xakanaxa tented suite with canopy bed and bush view

A full day to explore Moremi’s varied habitats. The morning game drive tracks through the ancient riverine forests and across grasslands that surround the camp — this sector of the reserve is known for its predator density, with lion, leopard and wild dog all recorded on recent visits. Between drives, the camp’s fire deck extends over the Khwai River and the plunge pool overlooks the lagoon — hippos graze in front of the tents and elephants wander through camp after dark. In the afternoon, swap the vehicle for a motorboat and head out onto Xakanaxa Lagoon. The boat trips explore the deeper channels and reed-fringed waterways, offering a completely different perspective on the Delta’s wildlife. Birding from the water is exceptional, particularly during the summer breeding season when herons, storks and kingfishers crowd the heronry islands. After your final sundowner on the water, return to camp for dinner by candlelight, with drums marking the call to the table.

Day 5: Moremi to Maun

Aerial view of Okavango Delta floodplain and islands at golden hour

There’s time for a final morning activity before you leave Moremi — an early game drive or a last boat trip on the lagoon, depending on what calls you back. After brunch at camp, transfer to the airstrip for your light aircraft flight to Maun. The aerial view of the Delta on the way out is a fitting end — winding channels, scattered palm islands and the sheer scale of the wetland below. You’ll arrive in Maun by midday, connecting to onward flights or extending your journey elsewhere in Botswana.

Meals included: Breakfast & Brunch (B)

Drinks included: Local spirits, wines and beers (premium brands excluded)

Light aircraft transfers between camps

All transfers on this safari are by scheduled light aircraft on a seat-in-plane basis. You’ll fly from Maun to Makgadikgadi, from Makgadikgadi to Moremi, and from Moremi back to Maun — each flight offering a bird’s-eye view of the changing landscape below. At each stop, a short road transfer connects the airstrip to the camp. This means no long drives between destinations and more time in the bush. Luggage is limited to 20 kg per person in a soft bag (no hard cases).

Why book this itinerary?

Botswana’s fly-in safari circuit is built for combining camps, and most travellers pair destinations that feel similar — two Delta camps, or two Moremi camps with slightly different habitats. This itinerary does the opposite. It deliberately puts the arid Makgadikgadi Pans alongside the lush waterways of Moremi, giving you the widest possible range of landscape, wildlife and atmosphere in just four nights. The result is a safari that feels far more varied than its length suggests. It suits travellers who want to see more than one side of Botswana without committing to a longer trip.

Is this safari right for you?
  • Ideal if you want maximum landscape contrast in a short timeframe — arid pans and lush Delta in four nights
  • Ideal if you want both classic game drives and a water-based boat safari on the same trip
  • Prefer a pure water-and-woodland experience without the pans? Consider the Delta Essentials Fly-In (5 days, 2 camps)
  • Looking for a longer journey covering more of Botswana? Consider the Bush, Water & River Fly-In Safari (9 days, 3 camps)

Best time to visit

Both destinations peak during Botswana’s dry season, when wildlife concentrates along permanent water sources. May to August is the sweet spot — the zebra migration is in full swing at the Boteti and Moremi’s game viewing is at its richest.

The Boteti in full swing

May – August

  • Zebra herds in their thousands along the Boteti River — the migration at its most concentrated
  • Moremi’s game drives at their finest, with lion, leopard and wild dog active in cooler temperatures
  • Clear skies, low vegetation and dry conditions make wildlife easy to spot from both vehicle and boat
  • Peak demand — this itinerary books up well in advance for these months

Hot and wild

September – October

  • Temperatures climb but wildlife remains concentrated at permanent water — some of the year’s best sightings
  • Predator activity peaks as herds grow restless ahead of the rains
  • Dramatic afternoon skies and the first green flushes add depth to the landscape
  • Slightly lower demand than July–August — a strong choice if peak months are full

Transitions and birdsong

March – April & November – December

  • Shoulder-season rates apply — meaningful savings on the same two camps and flights
  • Migrant birds arrive in their thousands, with exceptional birding at Xakanaxa’s heronries
  • Landscapes at their most lush and photogenic, with newborn animals in November–December
  • Game is more dispersed than in the dry months, but the bush feels alive and uncrowded

Green and growing

January – February

  • The bush is at its most verdant, with dramatic afternoon thunderstorms and vivid skies
  • Green-season rates offer the best value of the year on this itinerary
  • Some camps on this itinerary are closed during this period — speak to us about alternative dates
  • Zebra herds may be at the Makgadikgadi Pans themselves, away from the Boteti River frontage
Zebra timing: The Makgadikgadi zebra migration follows the rains. Herds gather at the Boteti River from roughly May to October, then disperse south-east to the salt pans when the wet season begins. Your Moremi stop is excellent year-round.
