Monachira Camp
Lodge style Waterfront wilderness
Timeless safari retreat in Moremi
Set on the edge of the Monachira Channel in Botswana’s Moremi Game Reserve, Monachira Camp is an elegant new addition to the safari landscape. Elevated wooden decks look out across sweeping floodplains, where elephants, lions, and leopards roam freely, and birdlife flourishes around the nearby Gudigwa heronries. Opened in May 2025, this luxury tented camp combines the romance of a classic safari with a fresh, contemporary style. Remote and wonderfully peaceful, Monachira is designed for travellers seeking an immersive yet indulgent safari in Botswana, with its location offering one of the region’s rare year-round water safaris.
Canvas tents with contemporary comforts
At the heart of Monachira Camp are ten beautifully designed safari tents: eight luxury double or twin tents and two spacious family units, each thoughtfully positioned for privacy beneath the shade of island forests. Every tent sits on a raised deck with wide views over the wetlands, where the sights and sounds of the wild provide a constant backdrop. Interiors strike a careful balance between old-world safari charm and modern elegance, with striped canvas walls, jute rugs, and leather accents softened by plush bedding in earthy cream and mustard tones.
Each suite includes a comfortable lounge corner, a field bar stocked with your preferred drinks, and a high-quality coffee station for slow mornings on the veranda. The bathrooms are a highlight: double wooden vanities topped with rough-hewn Italian marble, both indoor and outdoor showers, and eco-conscious Healing Earth amenities. For those who enjoy a touch of indulgence, in-room spa treatments can be arranged, and the honeymoon tent even boasts an alfresco bathtub for starlit soaks.
Family travellers will appreciate the connecting two-bedroom tents, each with its own bathroom, offering both privacy and shared space. Beyond the rooms, the camp’s central hub features a lounge and dining pavilion styled with rattan baskets, soft-cushioned sofas, and natural history books for browsing between activities. Meals are served in open-sided dining areas or around the firepit, where guests gather for sundowners and stories beneath vast African skies. Two plunge pools overlook the plains, offering a refreshing pause between adventures.
Activities at Monachira Camp
While the camp’s design draws you in, it is the safari experience in Moremi Game Reserve that truly defines Monachira. This is one of the few camps in the region to offer year-round boating safaris along a permanent channel. Glide quietly in a mokoro among waterlilies, spotting African jacanas tiptoeing across the surface, or take a motorboat to explore remote heronries where thousands of storks and egrets gather. Game drives venture deeper into Moremi’s landscapes, with sightings ranging from big cats to semi-aquatic antelope. Guided walking safaris allow for a slower, more intimate exploration of the islands, while birdwatchers will relish the chance to glimpse rarities like Pel’s fishing owl. Whether you crave adventure or serenity, Monachira tailors its activities to ensure every guest finds their perfect rhythm in the wild.
Tripadvisor comments Monachira Camp
The camp is brand new and everything is beautifully designed. We received an extremely warm welcome and the personal touches made us feel really special. The tents are so deluxe and the swimming pools are lovely. Our guide, Moss, was great and we had amazing leopard and lion sightings. The water activities were sublime and the sundowners were great.
